Zavicefta is a new combination antibiotic intended for intravenous use to treat hospitalized patients with serious gram negative bacterial infections. It is a fixed combination of avibactam and ceftazidime, a beta lactamase inhibitor and cephalosporin respectively. There is a significant unmet need for new antibiotics to treat serious infections that are becoming increasing resistant, such as carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriacae, one of the precarious threats to hospitals in the UK.
