Drug Coupons: Helping a Few at the Expense of Everyone
As a way to settle down the recent riot against rapidly rising price of EpiPens, the pharmaceutical company Mylan offered to provide drug coupon as a solution. People who need to use EpiPen for their life-threatening allergic reactions can use the coupon up to $300 off at the pharmacy if their insurance plans has a deductible or a co-payment.
However, this seemingly good deal has controversial advantages and disadvantages. While it can make the drug more affordable by lowering its price especially the brand name drugs, it has a potential to increase total health spending by encouraging patients to choose more expensive drugs when there are lowered priced substitutes available.
