Turing Pharmaceuticals has been criticized by many for raising an old generic drug, Daraprim, which is use to treat cancer and AIDS from $13.50 a pill to $750 in the past month. However, recently, a biomedical company called Imprimis Pharmaceuticals introduced a cheaper alternative for just a $1 a pill. Impris avoids the long and costly FDA approval process by compounding pyrimethamine, the generic fomulation for Daraprim, with another generic compound which allows it to act as a compounding pharmacy. Impris hopes to introduce more affordable alternatives to other expensive generic medications.
